Comparing Constitutions

In this lesson, students will discuss the purpose of written constitutions and compare the Iroquois Confederacy's Great Law of Peace to the U.S. Constitution.

Teaching Tips: How to Use these Resources

  • If you don't have much time to spare, watch Thomas Jefferson explain in just two minutes the importance of the Bill of Rights. You'll find it on the The Bill of Rights video page.
  • The Bill of Rights video explores an alternate reality in which there is no Bill of Rights. Prep your students for the video by familiarizing them with the Bill of Rights using the The Bill of Rights teacher guide.
  • Teach high school students? The A More Perfect Union literacy resources are great primary source documents for older students, including Federalist No. 15 and a letter from George Washington. Our literacy resources also include lesson plans to help you use the primary sources, as well as glossaries to help with challenging vocabulary.
