Plein Air Paint Out at DeSoto Falls

On Saturday, September 29, local artist and Little River Arts Council board member Barbara Umland will greet artists at the beautiful DeSoto Falls, where the day will be spent painting outdoors, facing the challenge of capturing the light, colors, and motion unique to outdoor scenes. The Falls are located about 3 miles from downtown Mentone. Painting will begin between 9–9:30 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. There is no fee for this event. You must supply your own easel and supplies. Clean water for brushes will be refreshed during the day. We suggest you pack a lunch to bring with you; snacks and water will be provided. Please contact Barbara Umland for questions and registration at 256-619-1004. Not a painter? Feel free to visit the artists at the Falls while they paint and have a look at their progress. At 4:30 p.m., a reception for the artists will be held at the Mentone Inn Pavilion. The public is invited to meet the artists and view their artwork of the day.

Cahaba River Fry-Down

On September 30, 2018 at Railroad Park, twelve teams of culinary competitors will do battle to see who can create the most delectable catfish dish and sides at the 9th annual Cahaba River Fry-Down. Teams of celebrity judges will choose the winners in categories such as "Best Presentation," "Most Creative," and "Best Overall." Members of the general public will get to taste all of the dishes and vote for their choice to win the coveted "Crowd Favorite" award. In addition to the catfish cooking competition, the event will feature fun for all ages with a carnival atmosphere, delicious food, a climbing wall, wildlife demonstrations, hula-hoopers, belly dancers, face-painters, arts and crafts, educational games, a bar with signature cocktails and craft beers, live music, and more.Tickets include catfish and sides for $20 ($15 of which is a tax-deductible charitable contribution). Kids 12 and under are free. Proceeds benefit The Cahaba River Society.

Boaz Harvest Festival

Fall is around the corner and the town of Boaz is gearing up for its annual autumn celebration. Returning for the 54th year, the October Harvest Festival is set for October 5-6, 2018, bringing with it two days of music, arts and crafts and other family-friendly fun. The free event takes place in historic downtown Boaz, located along Highway 168 just off of US Highway 431. Festival hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. During the October Harvest Festival, over 200 arts and crafts vendors will line Main Street giving festivalgoers a chance to shop for unique items. Children will be entertained throughout the day with a free inflatable play area with rides and games (tickets required for a nominal fee). Read and Romp Birmingham 2018

Read and Romp-Birmingham is an exciting, innovative FREE family literacy event. At Read and Romp-Birmingham, children will be engaged in fun, learning-based activities themed around favorite children’s books. Children will leave the event with goodies that they have either created or earned by completing each station along with a stamped passport and a bag of brand new books. By associating fun-filled activities with reading, parents will learn ways to engage with their child on the life-long journey of learning at an early age, which will help increase their children’s success in school.

Fair Housing Act 50th Anniversary Night

The Birmingham Association of Realtors is celebrating the Fair Housing Act's 50th Anniversary with a Family Fun Night, Friday, Oct. 12 from 5:30 to 10:00pm at Railroad Park. It's a FREE event featuring food trucks and moonwalks, with free popcorn and coke for the first 500 attendees. Entertainment includes a showing of the film "A Wrinkle in Time" and a short documentary on the Fair Housing Act. Music at Messiah Classical Concert

On Friday, October 14, 2018 at 4:00 p.m., the 2018-2019 "Music at Messiah Classical Concert Series" continues with Yakov Kasman, along with daughter, Dina, who together will present a piano concert of solo and four-hand works by Rachmaninoff, Hindemith, Bach, Schubert, and others. Get Fit Selma

"Get Fit Selma! 2018 Health & Fitness Festival" and the "Defeat Diabetes" 5K Run & Community Fun Runs are community events focused on health & wellness for the whole family. They will take place Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Wallace Community College Selma, 3000 Earl Goodwin Pkwy. The Festival opens at 8:00 am with the 5K Run, Community Fun Runs and Tot Trot and proceeds with free health screenings including vision, weight and BMI. The Health Education Fair includes 35 health and social service organizations. We have special guest Ellen McKnight, The Maxine Firm, teaching us how to eat right for body and spirit, Alabama Champions for the NFL Players Association, a demonstration of the lost art of Double Dutch and for the kids - Human Hamster Balls, games and prizes. The day ends with the BOSS Youth League Basketball Tournament at the School of Discovery, 400 Washington, which runs from 1:00 to 3:30 pm. The tournament is open to local teams. The Wall That Heals - Huntsville

The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter-scale replica of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., and its companion Mobile Education Center, is coming to Huntsville and will be on display November 1-4 at John Hunt Park, 2151 Airport Road in Huntsville. The Wall That Heals is free and open to the public and will be open 24 hours a day during its stay in Huntsville. The Wall That Heals - Huntsville is presented by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF), the founders of The Wall memorial in Washington, D.C. Brought to you in partnership with the City of Huntsville, AUSA Redstone-Huntsville Chapter, and the Huntsville Madison County Veterans Memorial.
